Synopsis

Vulnerability. Most encounters with this word usually evokes a negative connotation or seen as a weakness; as if exposing yourself in an honest and true way is wrong. But is it possible to think of the opposite? What if allowing yourself to be vulnerable is exceptionally brave?

Expose It is a journey of these complex questions. The piece begins in the state of isolation and darkness. The dancers are caught up in their own personal fears and doubts. These barriers limit the potential of emotional and personal growth of each dancer. Feeling the sense of being stuck in a rut, the choreography loops and accumulates into a manic state of frustration. By presenting vulnerability to the group the dancers find the courage to experience an unparalleled beauty.

Within the piece, the use of socks go beyond the functional and aesthetic look. The socks in this piece are a metaphor for the limitations, fears and doubts we put on every day. The dancers attempt to shed these limits only for them to come back time and again due to the comfort and familiarity. By cycling through the process of shedding and gaining the layers of socks the dancers discover that even though it may be painful at times, these limits are far more damaging than shedding them. The moment the dancers realize their vulnerability is a strength, is the moment they set themselves free. Expose It is a journey devised to provoke thought and emotion within the viewer and inspires courage to be vulnerable.
